One main cause of clogs in the kitchen is grease build up that narrows the opening in the pipes. Garbage disposals are convenient and prevent your garbage from smelling but they do not keep grease out of your plumbing system.
A good tip is to scrape your greasy plates and dishes off into a metal can or a reinforced trash bag. Greasy foods that can cause problems are butter, cooking oil, sauces, meats, dairy, and a variety of other food scraps.
Use a strainer to catch those food scraps and other solids to keep your pipes clean longer. This also applies to hair in bathroom drains and lint in laundry tubs, use a strainer and regularly check to make sure there is not a buildup getting ready to block the drain.
Another important tip: Contrary to popular belief, Baby Wipes Are Not Flushable…they will not break down and often cause damage to your sewer or septic system.
When you notice that your drain is slowing down, call a licensed plumber (obviously we want you to call Brendan Walsh Plumbing if you are in Southeastern PA). The important thing is to nip it in the bud before you have to call a plumber to replace your pipes, a little maintenance of your plumbing system really does go a long way!
One more thing…Avoid using chemicals in your pipes, they often are caustic and break down the integrity of the pipe in your plumbing system. Try a plunger and if that doesn’t work, just give us a call!
